No longer hidden behind a first-person perspective, it's a real treat to see a miniature version of her, complete with springy boots and famous portal gun. However, the touch that makes the table stand out for me is that series protagonist Chell is found standing at the bottom of the table on full display. Malevolent intelligence GLaDOS resides in the upper-left corner, Atlas and P-Body pop up when activated after a series of combos, Wheatley offers commentary, and even the unseen Ratman makes an ‘appearance' via a special sub-table. The entire playing field looks like a broken-down room straight from the ramshackle testing labs of Aperture, and every recognizable character can be found and heard. Now that we're all up to speed, I feel confident in saying Zen has done a fantastic job of incorporating all of the various Portal elements into this table. I'm guessing that every person who might lay eyes on this review is probably more than familiar with Valve's seminal work, but if by some strange circumstance there's a reader out there who isn't, click here to find out all about it. I feel like a broken record at this point, but what else can I write about these folks that I haven't said already? In light of this, let's keep this short. I've enjoyed the pinball tables that Zen has been putting out for a while now, and it seems like each one is better than the last. The current source of my frustration? Zen Studios. WTF I thought the Companion Cube would play a larger role…Īs a reviewer, I occasionally run into a problem when examining several pieces work from developers who keep knocking it out of the park–after a while, there just aren't a lot of positive things to say without repeating myself. LOW Constantly losing my ball in the leftmost gutter. Just keep in mind that if you bought the stand-alone Marvel Pinball or Star Wars Pinball releases, you’ll need to import them into Zen Pinball 2 for PS3 first, then to the PS4 version, as the import tool can’t pull directly from the stand-alones - a miniscule inconvenience for having so many awesome tables to play on your shiny, new PS4 for free.Keep your eyes peeled for our full review of Zen Pinball 2 for PS4 around the time of its US release on 12/17, while our friends in Europe will have to wait one additional day to get their pinball on.HIGH Getting Atlas and P-Body together for the first time. Sadly, not every table has made the jump to glorious 1080p/60fps goodness, but the ones that have will be free for anyone who’s purchased them on Vita or PS3. 19 other tables from Zen’s catalogue have been ported up too, representing a mix of their most popular offerings including Infinity Gauntlet, World War Hulk, the Star Wars tables, and older favorites like Sorcerer’s Lair and Paranormal. Strange isn’t the only table available for the PS4 version however, not by a long shot. This table will definitely get your catch skills in shape.ĭr. Ramps are numerous, and easy to hit, but the challenge is controlling the ball, as it likes to come down at tricky angles on a semi-regular basis. Sword duels with Baron Mordo play out with fully animated 3D models, and the Eye of Agamotto rises up from the center of the main playfield to form a smaller secondary one. As usual, Zen Studios has packed this table with a bounty of multi-ball and mission modes that play with the freedom afforded by video pinball. Thankfully, it’s as fun to play as it is to look at, too. Not only does the table feel true to the character, it feels like the kind of device you’d find tucked away in his personal sanctuary. Ramps and drop targets hum with whimsical energies when struck, underscoring Strange’s voice as a swears by the 12 moons of Munnopor. The rune-etched launcher spins and shudders with energy as it charges up, while cards with mystic symbols drawn on them swirl about the slingshots. Presentation continues to be the series’ strong suit, as every inch of this table is packed with details and little touches that pay homage to The Sorcerer Supreme.
